History: Kowai Archives

Preview of version: 3 (current)

The Kowai Archives Society was formed in 1990 and is based in the former Kowai County Office at Balcairn.  This building was opened in 1922 as a Peace Memorial for the district and has a Class 2 designation from the Historic Places Trust.

The Society collects and preserves historical items relating to the area  between the Ashley and Waipara Rivers (the former Kowai County).  These items include family histories, records from churches, schools, cemeteries, local businesses and sports groups.  These are made available to researchers and anyone interested in the history of the area.

Meeting Times

Our building has recently been repaired and strengthened. Volunteers work Wednesday afternoons and visitors are welcome 1.30-3.30pm or by appointment.
